Overview:

This project entailed the drafting of a collection development plan for the Zine Library at ABC No Rio, a community center in lower Manhattan. The completed plan, which is directed towards the average user, describes the community that the ABC No Rio Zine Library serves and the collection at the time of writing. The plan also addresses policies regarding acquisitions, circulation, patron privacy, funding, copying, maintenance, and the reconsideration or removal of materials. The policy also discusses the Punk Music Special Collection.

The Challenge:

  • The ABC No Rio Zine Library grew organically with no real oversight

  • The library had no definite plan for the acquisition of new materials or the deaccessioning of old

  • The library had no clear directives regarding user interaction with materials, ex: copying of materials

Methodology:

  • Contextual inquiry

  • User Interviews

  • Persona creation

  • "Competitor" Analysis

Findings:

  • Users and volunteer librarians want to know the makeup of the library's collection at a glance

  • Users do not know the extent to which they can reproduce materials

  • Volunteer librarians would like a clear way to manage the collection's development

Deliverables:

  • A clear description of the target user community

  • Policies regarding acquisitions, circulation, patron privacy, funding, copying, maintenance, and the reconsideration or removal of materials.

  • A document addressing all the above for easy reference and redrafting, when necessary
